Watch a version of the play to get a good idea of a key reason for the Shakespeare Hoax- the 'history plays' function as extraordinary propaganda for the Tudor dynasty and for Empire itself. The ‘history plays’ as hidden propaganda WAS NOT NOTICED UNTIL THE 1940’s, 350 years after Richard III was written!! MIND BLOWING!! TO WATCH: The newish Hollow Crown version of Richard III is quite good. Their Henry VI part 1 and 2 is unwatchable, though their Richard II is excellent, and shows more incredibly well done propaganda.

There is the Laurence Olivier version- the vibe is much more a low-key 'quiet evil' affair, the opposite of McKellen's. Listener Simon likes it... I have not seen either of the last two yet.
